The music produced in the concentration camps, in the midst of all that pain, gave thousands of people the strength to carry on in one of the darkest moments in human history, demonstrating how essential passion is to human survival.
In thirty-five years of research, the Institute of Musical Literature of the Concentration Camp in Barletta has recovered thousands of scores, hundreds of hours of recordings of survivors and their children, and hundreds of musical works written in captivity on unimaginable media. Musical and lyrical texts reconstructed from nearly illegible handwriting.
Thanks to the passion and tireless commitment of maestro Francesco Lotoro and his collaborators, the institute is undertaking an immense task of inventorying material of unparalleled historical and artistic value.
The 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐨 𝐝𝐢 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐢 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐢 and the Archival and Bibliographic Superintendency of Puglia together want to contribute to giving all this literature a home, so that this music can be studied, explored and promoted.
