Trip to Israel

Kiryat Ono, Jerusalem

Francesco Lotoro, Grazia Tiritiello

In Kiryat Ono we met the singer Aviva Bar-On, who was deported to Theresienstadt at the age of 13 and entrusted to the care of the writer and composer Ilse Weber at the Pavillon C41. Bar-On memorized numerous of Weber's songs, several of which were never written down in score.

Even though we had met her in previous years, we decided to meet her again to allow her to sing again two songs from which some verses had been omitted due to forgetfulness.

Most of the trip was spent in Jerusalem at the Yad Vashem Library and Research Centre ; thanks to keyword searches, algorithms were activated that allowed us to identify hundreds of documents, diaries and musical manuscripts , including Abschiedslied , written by Ilse Weber on a sheet of notebook paper in 1939 on the platform of Prague's main station while her son Hanuš was travelling away on a Kindertransport train.

Research continued at the National Library of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , where we completed previously begun research; at the National Library's Sound Archive, we acquired phonographic material from the Theresienstadt musicians.

We met Noemi Cohn Cassuto , daughter of the French Jewish flautist and composer…
